Half Craft Pearls

Discover Sparkling AB-Coated Pearls in Every Color

Aurora Borealis rhinestones, commonly referred to as AB rhinestones by crafters and jewelers, are high-quality resin pearls featuring an iridescent finish that adds extra sparkle and shine beyond regular pearl colors. AB rhinestones are most often made from glass or acrylic and feature a special metallic coating that reflects light in multiple colors, creating an iridescent effect.

The name Aurora Borealis is inspired by the northern lights, a natural light phenomenon known for its striking, rainbow-like, multicolored glow. Because of their eye-catching sparkle, AB rhinestones are widely used in fashion jewelry, dance costumes, apparel embellishments, and a variety of arts and craft projects.

You can find the perfect pearl shade for any project. At Planet Rhinestone, there are more than 17 unique color options, including the following:

  • Snow White
  • Classic Ivory
  • Baby Pink

The smooth, flat backing makes these half-round pearls easy to glue securely onto tumblers, cups, shoes, and clothing. Really, any smooth surface is perfect for flatback rhinestones. You just need the right glue and application.

How To Attach Flatback, Glue-On Rhinestones

Attaching flatback, glue-on rhinestones is not difficult at all. It’s actually one of the most popular rhinestoning methods for beginners. This technique is precise, but requires minimal equipment, so it's ideal for anyone just starting out or for crafters on the move. All you need is your rhinestones and glue.

There are many adhesives on the market formulated specifically for securing rhinestones. Choosing the right glue makes a big difference, but so does your application method. First, let’s choose the glue. We recommend one of the following options:

  • E6000 Glue: This is a non-flammable (once cured), paintable, temperature-resistant glue that’s tough and flexible. It works on fabric, metal, wood, ceramic, and more.
  • Liquid Fusion: This glue is transparent and UV-resistant. It works on wood, stone, ceramic, and fabric.

Always test your glue, surface, and technique on a scrap piece or hidden area before starting your project. Never use glue on a surface it’s not designed for. It won’t properly affix.

To apply rhinestones, you should follow a few simple steps:

  1. Ensure the adhesive reaches the edges of each stone so they are fully secured. This helps prevent lifting, snagging, or stones peeling off over time.
  2. Allow proper drying time as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Handle or wash finished projects gently to keep the rhinestones affixed.

Avoid using instant adhesives such as superglue, products containing acetone, or hot glue. Not only do these adhesives damage materials, but they also create brittle bonds that fail with wear and can discolor rhinestones.

The right adhesive and proper application will get you professional-looking results across a wide range of creative projects.

Versatile DIY Applications for Every Crafter

Pearl beads have a near-endless list of possible applications. They’re a best seller for a reason.

Tumbler & Drinkware Decoration

Transform plain cups, tumblers, mugs, and wine bottles into custom sparkly creations with pearl embellishments. Only apply craft pearls on the outside of drinkware, and mock up a pattern first. This will help you get the details right on the actual application.

Fashion & Accessories

You can add elegant pearl accents to:

  • Shoes
  • Crocs
  • Clothing
  • Bags
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Phone cases

Keep in mind that while craft pearls are water-resistant when applied correctly, they are not completely waterproof. If you're using these pearls for a swimsuit, goggles, or other water-based craft, then you may experience some shedding.

Craft & Beauty Projects

Perfect for nail art, scrapbooking, card making, wedding decorations, face gems, hair accessories, and DIY gift projects. Before using these pearls in card making, hair accessories, or nail art (crafts that receive a lot of wear), we recommend practicing applying craft pearls. It can take a few tries to learn how to properly glue these little pearls. A practice session can help you get it right when it comes to your final project.

FAQs: Rhinestone Fabric

What are craft pearls, and how do they work?

Craft pearls are flatback half-round resin beads with a smooth bottom that adheres to surfaces using craft glue or adhesive. These pearls are extremely easy to use, even for beginning crafters, and are durable when applied properly.

Do Planet Rhinestone pearls have AB coating?

Most craft pearls from Planet Rhinestone feature AB (Aurora Borealis) coating for extra iridescent sparkle and shine. Look through our entire craft pearl line and select the perfect shimmery stone you need.

What surfaces can I apply craft pearls to?

Craft pearls stick best to smooth surfaces like tumblers, cups, phone cases, shoes, fabric, paper, and plastic using an appropriate adhesive. As long as the surface is flat, you can bedazzle to your heart's content.

Are these pearls safe for nail art?

Yes, flatback craft pearls can be used for nail art decoration and can be applied with nail glue or gel top coat. We do not recommend applying a top coat over the AB beads, as this can dim the shimmer.

How many pearls come in each pack?

Quantity varies by size. Smaller pearls (3mm-4mm) typically include 1,000+ pieces per pack, while larger sizes (8mm-10mm) include 100-200 pieces. Getting the right size depends on your specific craft project and general rhinestoning needs.

We recommend leaning on the size of having too many pearls for your needs. There’s nothing worse than running out of pearls mid-project.

Can craft pearls be washed on decorated items?

Handwashing in cool water is recommended; machine washing and high heat may loosen the adhesive bond over time. Generally, try to wash your pearls as little as possible.

What's the difference between regular and AB craft pearls?

AB craft pearls have an iridescent Aurora Borealis coating that creates rainbow-like reflections, making them shinier than regular pearl finishes. Pick AB beads when you’re looking for extra-shiny rhinestones for an extra-special project.
