Frequently Asked Questions

How to apply hotfix rhinestones with a heat press?

A heat press makes applying hotfix rhinestones quick and easy. A heat press, like a hotfix wand, uses focused heat to secure rhinestones, making it perfect for adding sparkle to your favorite shirt or giving a tote bag a stylish upgrade.

Start by creating your design. Gather your Planet Rhinestone hotfix rhinestones and rhinestone accessories like heat transfer tape, a wax pen, transfer paper, and a heat press. Set your heat press to the right temperature — usually 300°F to 325°F — and double-check your manufacturer’s guide for best results. Heat-up averages 5-15 minutes.

Use a wax pen to arrange the hotfix crystals in your custom design. If you’re working on a hard surface instead of building the design where it’ll end up, simply secure the rhinestones using heat transfer tape and move them later.

Cover your design with transfer paper and push down with the heat press using moderately firm pressure. Most rhinestone designs need pressure for 5-20 seconds. Check for any loose rhinestones, let it cool, and your dazzling design is ready to shine.

What can you put hotfix rhinestones on?

Hotfix rhinestones can turn just about anything into a masterpiece! Think hoodies, dresses, purses, belts, hats, shoes, and other clothing and accessories. For home décor that sparkles, consider rhinestone creations on art canvases, wooden picture frames, jewelry boxes, lampshades, or even throw blankets.

They also add a glamorous touch to paper projects. Use hotfix crystals in vibrant colors for scrapbooks, greeting cards, wedding invitations, or party décor.

For quick sparkle, try our Planet Rhinestone bulk hotfix rhinestones or gorgeous hotfix transfers. Ready to go bold? Create custom DIY projects with multicolored hotfix stones, rhinestone fringe, and cording for endless possibilities.

Hotfix rhinestones aren’t meant to come off, so it’s important to plan your design before applying the stones. This way, you can see how it’ll look and whether you want to make any changes before you press.

Can you wash clothes with hotfix rhinestones?

Yes, with care. Treat your clothes gently to keep rhinestones sparkling, gorgeous, and securely in place.

Handwashing is the safest way to wash rhinestone-bedazzled clothes. The cooler the water, the less likely the glue is to dissolve. It's best to avoid any treatment sprays or harsh detergents that can dull the rhinestone's surface. Fabric softeners are also too harsh and can cause the stones to lift off.

Fill a small tub with cold to lukewarm, soapy water and gently swirl the clothes for several minutes. Then, rinse them until the water runs clear and squeeze gently without twisting the fabric. Hang to dry.

Some fabrics are okay to clean in a washing machine. If you prefer machine-washing, use the delicate cycle, cold water, and a protective mesh bag. To keep the rhinestones at their shimmering best, turn the clothes inside out. Dryers are too hot for the rhinestone glue. Skip the dryer and hang to dry instead.

What is the difference between hotfix and flatback rhinestones?

Hotfix and flatback rhinestones have different backing surfaces. From the front, these glittering embellishments look identical. Flip them over, though, and you’ll see what makes the two styles unique.

Flatback rhinestones have a back that’s smooth and flat. The backing color is often gray or white, but can also match the color of the rhinestones. These stones are versatile and can be applied to a variety of surfaces as long as you use the proper adhesive.

Unlike flatbacks, hotfix rhinestones have a raised backing covered in heat-activated glue. You don’t need to buy extra glue for your crafting or couture projects. Just grab your favorite heat tool, like heat presses, mini irons, and hotfix applicator wands, and you're ready to start your masterpiece. You can also find hotfix rhinestones in curated designs by using hotfix transfers and hotfix fabric sheets

Is hotfix better than glue?

It depends on the project. Hotfix adhesives last longer on clothing fabrics and other textured surfaces, like picture frames, lampshades, or soft furnishings. It’s not as effective on very smooth surfaces, like plastic, glass, or metal.

Hotfix rhinestones are considered the best choice for clothing, whether you’re a professional costume designer or a DIY enthusiast embellishing your own wardrobe. The activated glue creates a secure bond once it cools and hardens, fusing with the fabric fibers to create precise, dazzling designs.

Glue can be more versatile than hotfix adhesive, but you must purchase the correct adhesive for each type of project. Some glues are suitable for clothing, while others are made for wood, glass, or other industrial uses. You’ll need to match the glue to your project to ensure a secure “stick.”

In short, glue is more versatile, but hotfix rhinestones are the faster, stronger choice for fabric projects and the easiest way to get polished, professional-quality results every time.
